QB KULKA, LB GANDY NAMED AF1 OFFENSIVE & DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF WEEK; KATS SWEEP LEAGUE WEEKLY PLAYER AWARDS

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – For the first time in Arena Football One (AF1) history, the Nashville Kats have swept the league’s weekly players awards.

Following the Nashville Kats’ win Saturday at the Michigan Arsenal, the Kats had players named AF1 Most Valuable Player, Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week for Week 9.

On Monday, wide receiver Kendyl Williams was named AF1 Most Valuable Player. On Tuesday, quarterback Tyler Kulka was tabbed AF1 Offensive Player of the Week. And today, linebacker Jordan Gandy was named AF1 Defensive Player of the Week.

All the accolades came from the Kats’ 68-51 win Saturday at the Michigan Arsenal. The Kats are now 6-1 heading into a three-game homestand that starts Saturday at 4 p.m. versus the Minnesota Monsters at “The Den” – FM Bank Arena in downtown Clarksville.

In the win Saturday to sweep the season series with Michigan, Gandy had six tackles and two interceptions with one of those returned for a touchdown. For the season playing also at wide receiver, the Murray State product has 19 catches for 301 yards and three touchdowns.

Kulka was named AF1 Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after sharing the honor with his brother, Albany quarterback Luke Kulka, in Week 3.

Kulka completed 21 of 30 passes for 253 yards and five touchdowns and one interception. The other two TD passes were completed to Malik Honeycutt, who had five receptions for 105 yards.

For the season, Kulka has completed 138 of 198 passes (65.7 percent) for 1,740 yards with 36 touchdowns and four interceptions. He is averaging 248.6 yards passing per game. He also has one rushing TD.

In the league’s offensive statistical rankings, Kulka is second in both TD passes and yards per game and third in overall passing yards.

Williams had 11 catches for 121 yards and three touchdowns. It was his second game on the Kats’ roster, following a three-TD receiving performance in the team’s win May 22 at the Minnesota Monsters.

Like his former college and current Kats teammate Kulka, Williams is a product of Lawrence Tech, a NAIA program in Southfield, Mich. His 18 points per game and three TDs per game averages lead the league in both categories.

For the season, Kulka is tied with Michigan quarterback Malik Henry for the league lead with 36 touchdown passes. He ranks second in the league in total passing yardage (1,740) and passing yards per game (248).

Honeycutt is third in the league in both total receiving yardage (655) and receptions yards per game (93.6.).

The Kats are 6-1 and in second place in the AF1 standings heading into a three-game home stretch of games starting Saturday versus the Minnesota Monsters. Following that is a rematch of last season’s AF1 Arena Crown title game versus the Albany Firebirds on June 20 and then hosting the Beaumont Renegades on June 27.

All three games have a 4 p.m. kickoff and will played at “The Den” – the home of the Kats -- F&M Bank Arena in downtown Clarksville. All AF1 games this season can be watched at TheAF1.com — the league’s official website – and the league’s YouTube channel. The June 20 matchup versus Albany will be the VICE TV National Game of the Week. Last season, the Kats went 7-5 and advanced to the AF1 Arena Crown championship game before falling 60-57 to the Albany Firebirds.
